The Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary (PBM+C) will open its eight edition with a VIP Preview on Thursday, March 20th, from 5pm - 9pm at the Palm Beach County Convention Center.
Vertu Fine Art is one of the many national and international galleries taking part in this premier winter art fair. We are exhibiting fine art prints, in a variety of media, that reflect the wide array and distinctiveness of the art and artists whose works are in our gallery.
Featured at VFA are works from well known masters, like David Hockney, who has been creating paintings and fine art prints for more than half a century, to younger artists, like Felipe Pantone, who experiment with modern technology, tools and design.
One of the outstanding works in our exhibit is David Hockney’s Paper Pool, 1980. For Hockney, who rarely saw a pool in Yorkshire, the swimming pool was a defining cultural image of California. “In the swimming pool pictures, I had become interested in the more general problem of painting the water, finding a way to do it.” Hockney wrote, “It is an interesting formal problem; it is a formal problem to represent water, to describe water, because it can be anything. It can be any colour and it has no set visual description.”
Hockney made many paintings and prints of swimming pools; his Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) briefly held the record for most expensive work by a living artist when it sold at auction for $90.3 million in November 2018, before a Jeff Koons sculpture topped it in May.
He not only made paintings of pools, but painted bold swirls on the sides and bottom of the pool in his Hollywood Hills home, the subject of Paper Pool, 1980 available in our gallery. He also painted the walls and bottom of the Tropicana Pool at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in 1988, which underwent restoration in 2019.
Every artist has their own distinctive way of creating their prints. Some, like Donald Sultan, have printing equipment in their studio. Others, like British-born Harland Miller, work with a master printer. Miller’s goal is to produce works that have the look and feel of original Penguin book covers, the books that he found so comforting as a young artist living in Paris.
Also available in our exhibit will be works by Julian Opie, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Serra, Donald Sultan, Robert Longo, Mel Bochner, Michael Craig-Martin and Damien Hirst.
The PBM+C runs from Friday, March 21st through Sunday March 23.
