VFA at Art Palm Beach 2024

Art Palm Beach is back!  This year’s show will be held from January 24th to 28th at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. We’ll be at Booth 306, exhibiting recently acquired work by modern and contemporary  artists. A preview of the work is here.

Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997)

Celebrations have been held this past year to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Roy Lichtenstein’s birth, beginning with the U.S. Postal Service honoring the great artist with a set of Forever stamps.

 

Upcoming exhibits of Lichtenstein’s work will be held this year at the Albertina in Vienna and the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. Most exciting of all is the retrospective being planned at the Whitney Museum in the Fall of 2026.

 

Featured at VFA is Roy Lichtenstein’s Blue Face from his iconic Brushstroke Figures Series.

Harland Miller (b.1964)

British artist Harland Miller combines humor with an undercurrent of angst in his works, based on Penguin book covers.

 

Penguin threatened to sue him a few years ago for using their famous Penguin and Pelican logos. Instead, the publisher embraced his work and gave him access to the company’s considerable archives.

 

Miller skillfully creates many of his works in woodcut, screenprint and etchings, which will be on view at Art Palm Beach, including recently acquired woodcut, Oui, done in 2022.

Frank Stella (b.1936)

The artworld was turned on its ear when Frank Stella showed his Black Paintings in 1959, when he was a 23-year-old Princeton graduate who had just moved to Manhattan. Stella is 87 now. Over the last sixty-plus years his work he has added color, texture and breadth to his work. 

 

His first Black Painting, Delta, was recently shown at Art Basel Miami, with an asking price of $45 million. 

 

For us at VFA, it was the decades he spent with master printmaker, Kenneth Tyler, that we greatly appreciate. A Squeeze of the Hand, a serigraph/collage that Stella created in 1988, will be on display at Art Palm Beach.

Susumu Kamijo (b. 1975, Nagano, Japan)

The works of Brooklyn-based artist Susumu Kamijo have been garnering international recognition. His fascination with poodles, who were introduced to him through his dog-grooming girlfriend, have been exhibited in Seoul, Berlin, Brussels, Paris, New York, Miami, Tokyo and Los Angeles.

Both an oil and pastel drawing and a poodle sculpture will be available at our display.

Alex Katz (b.1927)

 The simple and elegant works of Alex Katz dazzled the art world at his retrospective at the Guggenheim last year.

 

Since his student days at Cooper Union, Katz has befriended and supported poets and visual artists. Paintings and sculptures of some of those friends were on exhibit at the Guggenheim retrospective. Katz has been a generous art patron for many years. His foundation has not only donated millions of dollars to arts organizations, but has also bought works by other artists and donated more than 700 works to museums.

 

His mastery of color is apparent in Katz’s fine art screenprints, woodcuts and linocuts. Red Coat, done in 1983, is just one of the works that will be on exhibit at Art Palm Beach.
