Commemorating Picasso

Museums and galleries around the world are observing the 50th anniversary of Pablo Picasso’s death. Picasso  was born in Spain in 1881 and died in France on April 8, 1973 at age 91.

The French and Spanish governments are observing the anniversary with a collaboration called Celebration Picasso 1973-2023, a collection of exhibits that will be held across Europe and the United States. The Guggenheim will have an exhibit that focuses on a single year in Picasso’s life - 1900 - the year that a young Picasso arrived in Paris. Young Picasso in Paris will be on view May 12 through Aug. 6, 2023.

An exhibit at The Museum of Modern Art will focus on the summer of 1921, when Picasso created some of his early primitive and cubist works. Picasso in Fontainebleau will be on exhibit from October 1, 2023 through February 10, 2024. The Brooklyn Museum will host a show with a twist: It’s Pablo-matic: Picasso According to Hannah Gadsby looks at the artist’s bad behavior with the women in his life. Australian comedian, Hannah Gadsby, has been invited to assist with curating the show from a feminist perspective. The show will run from June 2 through Sept. 24, 2023.

Katherine Bernhardt in Hong Kong

Katherine Bernhardt’s bold, bright, quirky and carefree style has made her an international sensation.

She is having her first solo exhibit in Hong Kong, which will include paintings of Pokemon characters. A recent New York show, I’m Bart Simpson, who the hell are you?  featured her paintings of Bart Simpson with his pants down, mooning the viewer.

Bernhardt mixes high and low art, pop culture and a pure, dazzling style in her works that reflect the culture of her 1980s childhood. She is also giving lesser-known artists a space to showcase their work in the gallery she created next to her St. Louis studio.

Her works are included in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian, the Rubell Collection in Miami, the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh and other major venues around the world.

Katherine Bernhardt’s Hong Kong solo show will be on exhibit from May 20 to August 19, 2023.

The Works of Carmen Herrera in LA

The work of Carmen Herrera will be on exhibit at the Lisson Gallery’s new space in Los Angeles. The exhibit is a follow up to a recent show at the Lisson Gallery in New York. Herrera was born in Cuba, where she studied architecture at the Universidad de la Habana. Herrera is best known for her geometric abstract paintings. The LA show, Days of the Week, is an exhibit of a series of seven painting with black backgrounds. The exhibit will run from April 15 to May 26, 2023.

Carmen Herrera died in New York on February 12, 2022 at age 106.
