Squeak Carnwath
Squeak Carnwath is an American painter born in 1947 in Abington, Pennsylvania. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 1969 and her Master of Fine Arts from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 1973. Carnwath is known for her use of layered surfaces and complex imagery in her paintings.
Throughout her career, Carnwath has had numerous solo exhibitions and her work has been featured in group shows across the United States and internationally. She has received numerous grants and awards for her work, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1988 and a Flintridge Foundation Award in 2001. Her work can be found in the collections of major museums, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Carnwath is also a respected educator and has taught at several universities, including the University of California, Berkeley and the University of California, Davis. She is a recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of California, Berkeley.
Carnwath continues to live and work in California, where she creates her signature colorful and layered paintings that explore themes of memory, identity, and the human experience.
