Bruce Helander is an American artist, best known for his collage and assemblage works.
Helander was born in Great Bend, Kansas in 1947. His mother was an interior designer who inspired and encouraged him to study art. He attended the Rohode Island School of Design (RISD), receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1969 and his Master of Fine Arts in 1972.
He became the Director of Admissions at RISD and, eventually, the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs. During his tenure at RISD he became a White House fellow at the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1982, he opened the Helander Gallery on Worth Avenue, added a second gallery in Palm Beach in 1986 and a third in New York’s SoHo district in 1989.
In 2011, Helander studied at the Yale University School of Publishing and at Harvard’s School of Journalism and became Editor-in-Chief of The Art Economist magazine. He has curated exhibits at the Cuadro Fine Art Gallery in Dubai, ArtHouse429 in Palm Beach and the Coral Springs Museum of Art. In 2014 Helander was inducted to the Florida Artists Hall of Fame
His works are in the permanent collections of The Met, The Guggenheim, the Brooklyn Museum, the Smithsonian, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and many other major venues.
Bruce Helander lives and works in West Palm Beach, Florida.
